Justice and Repair is a racial justice initiative for repair .
Justice and Repair (J & R) is a racial justice Initiative of the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF). The Justice and Repair Initiative seeks to promote advocacy and global action on contemporary and historical crimes against the people of Africa and the Global African Diaspora. Justice & Repair will serve as an intermediary grant maker, a convenor, a narrative builder, and a repository for research and documentation on the intersection between racial and reparatory justice and healing. The Justice & Repair initiative also seeks to institutionalize reparatory frameworks nationally, regionally, continentally, and globally, for the full pursuit of justice and repair of the harm caused to Africans and people of the Global African Diaspora.
Mission
To bridge the gap between Africans and the Global African Diaspora to drive a common advocacy for racial and reparatory justice. As an intermediary funder, we build bridges between the African continent and the diaspora through grant-making, advocacy, convenings, and storytelling. We strive for a world where the barriers and structures of inequality that continue to marginalize Africans and people of the Global African Diaspora are pulled down.
Our Objectives
Our work promotes the following objectives:
We promote continental and global action to demand reparations for the slave trade, slavery, colonialism, and other mass atrocities through continental bodies and civil society organizations.
Through our work, we seek to connect advocacy groups in Africa and the Global African Diaspora for a common reparations agenda.
We promote healing and repair for Africans and people of the Global African Diaspora for mass atrocities, colonial crimes, and racial injustices.
Through advocacy and grant-making, we strengthen civil society connections and solidarity to build a strong movement for healing and reparatory justice.
Through convenings, publications, and creative story-telling, we set the agenda for preserving Africa’s narrative in documenting the history and legacies of mass atrocities and colonial crimes in Africa and the Global African Diaspora.
Our Approach
Grant-making: Through intermediary grant-making, the Justice and Repair Initiative provides funding to organizations in Africa working on healing initiatives and reparations for mass atrocities, colonial crimes, and racial injustices.
Convening: Under the Justice and Repair Initiative, ATJLF organizes periodic events and programs that bring together experts and practitioners to advance the cause of reparations. In 2022, it organized the Accra Summit where the Accra Declaration was made.
Research and Documentation: Through strategic institutional support and grant-making, the Justice and Repair Initiative continues to support the research and documentation of the history and developments surrounding reparations for mass atrocities, colonial crimes and racial injustices.
Story-telling: To shape the narrative surrounding the historical legacies of mass atrocities, colonial crimes, and racial injustices, the Justice and Repair Initiative supports the creative use of media to entrench an African narrative of the history and developments.
